How we work

RFSU’s efforts are comprised of education and capacity building work through the support of partner organisations that manage projects locally. Since RFSU strives for equality within society, this aim should also be reflected in our cooperation with partner organisations.

All of RFSU’s operations are focused on a gender and rights perspective. Throughout the world, men usually have more power than women over – politics, their own lives and their sexuality. Thus, men, as well as women, must work together to change this reality. Using a gender perspective we point out that norms based on gender restrict people’s ability to take actions and control their own lives. In addition, gender can affect legislation and consequentially impede equal rights and people’s access to health, power and the freedom to choose. With a human rights perspective RFSU considers certain fundamental rights to be a precondition for the freedom to exist, choose, enjoy and have access to information and healthcare. These rights are described and developed in various conventions and declarations and concern every individual. In our efforts we promote and follow-up on how these rights are realized through policies and legislation.

It makes sense
I appreciate how you work and implement your projects. however, I'm so interested to know how far your efforts have helped to rescue the society especially in Tanzania where policies regarding gender mainstreaming and sex education are still not well defined to the majority. In fact, as far as old traditions and customs roots are still vital to the majority, the definition of human rights is still viewed in different perspective despite the fact that the Acts, Conventions and policies have been incorporated in the mother law.

Why is SRHR important?

RFSU has been internationally engaged in projects and initiatives concerning sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for many years. Why is SRHR so important? Here are som examples.

Every year 358,000 women die from pregnancy related problems and as many as 8.7 million women are injured or develop infections in connection with childbirth.

2.6 million people are infected with HIV every year; 45 percent of them are between the ages of 15 and 24.

Every year 19 million unsafe abortions are preformed. 47,000 of those abortions end up killing the woman, and an additional 5 million women must be hospitalised due to injuries caused by these unsafe abortions.

More than 85 countries in the world criminalise homosexual acts. Punishments are varied and in some cases include lengthy prison sentences, lashings or, in the worst cases, the death penalty.

Framework Organisation of Sida since 2008

Swedish foreign aid is distributed in large part through framework organisations that work closely with Sida (the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency). RFSU has been a framework organisation of Sida’s since 2008. The first agreement period, which will begin in 2010, is comprised of efforts and projects with long-term financing in ten countries. This agreement will improve conditions for making efforts concerning SRHR in the respective countries more successful.
