RFSU is committed to fulfilling everyone’s right to safe and legal abortion. Abortion should not be restricted, prohibited or criminalized. Everyone should have the right to decide over their own body, but today, abortion is illegal, difficult or expensive to obtain in many settings.

47,000 women die every year due to unsafe abortions. Almost all these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, and the vast majority of them are avoidable. Women who live in poverty are much more vulnerable to unsafe abortions.

RFSU supports civil society organisations that work towards the decriminalization of abortion and to changing attitudes in society, so that access to safe abortion is increased. RFSU also advocates Swedish decision makers to make safe abortion a priority on the international development policy agenda.
