We influence policy

RFSU advocates for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Swedish foreign and development policy as well as at the EU, the UN and other important institutions.

Global policy

RFSU has high organisational capacity and a good track record when it comes to implementing advocacy programmes. We have many years of advocacy experience, and work with extensive networks of decision makers, opinion leaders and organisations in Sweden and globally.

Swedish development policy

The Swedish government and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) are important actors in the global development arena, with an embassy presence in low- and middle-income countries. So, it's important that Sweden has a strong SRHR focus, in both political dialogue as well as funding, in its official development assistance.

RFSU in the European Union

The EU has an important influence over global SRHR politics and is also the world's largest contributor to official development assistance. The EU member states have a strong voice within the UN and often negotiate together — for example, when the UN Commission for Women convenes. RFSU works with the European Parliament through its Swedish members and civil servants to influence decisions regarding SRHR. RFSU also works, in networks, to advocate the European Commission, especially regarding EU development policy.

RFSU at the UN

RFSU works to encourage the Swedish government to focus on issues related to SRHR in various UN connected matters. RFSU has been invited as part of the Swedish delegation to international meetings, such as the annual UN meeting Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and the Commission on Population and Development (CPD). At these meetings, RFSU provides expertise to the Swedish representatives, and cooperates with other like-minded actors and countries.

RFSU also works with the Human Rights Council in Geneva, which is where states review each other's human rights implementation and give recommendations on how to improve in this area. RFSU, together with partner organisations, prepares shadow reports and recommendations on SRHR matters where appropriate.
