From Harm to Hope – US Global Attacks on Gender Equality and SRHR

In the shadow of global trade wars, millions of lives are threatened by the dismantling of international aid. In this report from 2025, RFSU analyzes the next steps in the US administration's offensive against gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), as well as the systematic attacks on the UN system and international law.

Key Findings and Future Threats

The publication outlines how cut funding for life-saving SRHR services, withdrawals from the WHO, and joining anti-abortion pacts impact global efforts. The report predicts and warns of several upcoming developments:

  • Pressure on the UN System: Increased attempts to erase work on gender equality, SRHR, and diversity in order to weaken international law and global guidelines.
  • Expanded Attacks on Multilateral Cooperation: Demands that UN agencies adhere to US Executive Orders to secure continued funding.
  • Attacks on Research and Evidence: Targeted strikes against evidence-based research that underpins effective gender equality and health initiatives.
  • Restrictions on Philanthropic Support: Attempts to curb US philanthropic funding for SRHR and gender equality—a sector resource totaling over 900 billion US dollars.

Recommendations for Sweden and Europe

The report highlights concrete measures for how like-minded governments can counter this trend:

  • Short-term: The Swedish government must rapidly increase support to civil society and secure funding for vital initiatives in severely affected countries.
  • Long-term: Strengthen national funding for local health systems and gender equality initiatives to build a sustainable and independent structure.

The report is written by SRHR expert Malayah Harper on behalf of RFSU.
